About us

Sustainability

We take great pride in the organic materials we use to create our beautiful decks. As these materials become more available on the market, we hope other companies will follow our lead and integrate more sustainable decking alternatives into their repertoire.

Cork and FSC-certified teak: two eco-friendly alternatives

Not only is cork a stylish and durable material, but it’s also slip-resistant, easy to maintain, and has a lower carbon footprint than any other decking material. The cork-making process involves stripping the bark of the cork tree from its trunk, which then regenerates within 8-12 years, making it a truly sustainable choice.
If you want an eco-friendly boat deck that is durable, rot-resistant, and waterproof, teak is an excellent option. Teak is a strong material ideal for decking. Our teak is solely sourced from FSC-certified plantations. For every tree cut down, a new one is planted to ensure continued growth and supply.

A tale from Blue Dreams

When Östen Karlsson constructed his sailing vessel Blue Dreams, his heart was set on only one decking material: cork.
He was first acquainted with the material in 1996 when he helped install a cork deck on a 52-foot sailing yacht. Years later, upon encountering the same yacht, Östen was astonished to find that the deck had hardly changed over the course of two decades.
Said and done, Östen opted for a cork deck to keep his Blue Dreams looking tidy.
In 2022, he put his deck to the ultimate test as he embarked on a year-long voyage from Finland to the Caribbeans. As he set sail from Monäs harbor, he set his course for Las Palmas in the Canaries, where he would then proceed to sail to the Caribbean as part of the ARC+ race in November.
Despite challenging waves and sunlight, the deck held up remarkably well throughout the journey. The cork remained cool throughout the voyage, enabling Östen to walk barefoot on deck without experiencing any burns. The cork also acted as an insulator, reducing noise and vibration.
Östen remains confident in his choice of decking after returning from his year-long voyage, happy with the cork’s many qualities: low maintenance, skid-proof, easy to clean, and stands the test of time.
